What is Gluten Free?
Gluten Free can mean that a product does not contain any wheat, rye, oats or barley. It can also mean that it is made from a modified wheat that has had the gluten removed to a recognised level of safety.
Fresh fruit, fresh vegatables and un-processed meat are all gluten free, so cooking a basic meal without gluten is easy. Beware though of any sauces, seasonings, oils or other ingredients that you cook with as many will contain gluten in the form of wheatflour as a thickener, or barley malt extract as a colour. Be as equally careful with the drinks that you choose, for instance, some colas and some instant chocolate powders contain barley or wheatflour, and beer’s definitely off the menu.
